The
introduction of SCC1120
in 1994 to the UK transformer industry offered several important improvements
to the accepted methods of sealing
The
unique blend of Nitrile and Neoprene in SCC1120's
binder gives excellent sealing properties against all transformer oils
and protection against ozone ageing, which is a major factor with all
large electrical machines.
As
SCC1120 is available
in roll-form (1 metre wide), rather than in sheets, it is possible to
make large gaskets in one piece, thus obviating the need for dovetail
or scarf-joints. By definition, a one piece gasket MUST have fewer potential
leak paths than a jointed gasket.
WCL's
research into the different types and classifications of transformer
gaskets has revealed a great deal of commonality throughout the industry.
Using a combination of this knowledge and the benefits of sophisticated
cutting techniques, it has been possible to produce a range of standard
gaskets which are now more competitively priced through economies of
scale.
These
price benefits can be considerably enhanced by the implementation of WCL's supply
systems.
GASKET
KITS
A complete range of gaskets, supplied in one kit, can be scheduled to
meet the target dates for all phases of transformer manufacture. From
initial design stage through to site erection, the customer may be completely
confident that all sealing requirements will be met. WCL are able to tailor
individual kits to include other ancillary items such as 'O' Rings, 'O'
Ring Cord (in either Nitrile or Viton*), wooden underboards and Cable-Clamps,
plus Anti-Vibration Pads.

A
typical kit for a small distribution transformer may contain some, or
all of the following items:
Cover
Gasket - 1 off Cable
Box Gasket - 2 off Radiator
Gasket - 8 off Valve
Gasket - 4 off Oil
Gauge Gasket - 1 off Anti-vibration
Pads - 8 off
Suitably
packaged and labelled, these kits can be attached to each tank, and fitted
as required on the production line.
FAXBAN
This
is a simple but effective method of maintaining optimum stock levels of
gaskets, whilst remaining in control of inventory and cash-flow. It involves
a complete list of standard gaskets which is faxed to WCL showing required
quantities of individual parts. These requirements are taken from WCL stock,
and despatched to arrive on a next-day basis. If the faxban is used on
a regular weekly cycle, it may be possible to compliment the system with
a composite monthly invoice.
Possibly
the most effective system is a combination of both WCL Kits and WCL Faxban, with
the latter being used as back-up stock.
