Since the company's inception in 1923, Whitby & Chandler enjoyed a justifiable reputation for quality of product, competitive price, and service. In common with many other companies of it's type and size, WCL offered a wide range of product to every sector of the UK industry, without specialising in particular markets or materials.

This situation changed radically in 1994. WCL began to cooperate with Amorim Industrial Solutions Ltd, in a survey into the UK transformer & switchgear industry, with a view to the introduction of new cork-based sealing materials, and with the joint objectives of establishing new, improved industry standards.

The result of the survey indicated a need for a reliable, cost-effective sealing material which would seal against ALL transformer oils, thus negating the need for more than one sealing medium. The impact of the introduction of SCC1120 was considerable, so much so that SCC1120 is now approved and in service at every UK transformer manufacturing site. In order to maximise the competitive status of SCC1120, WCL has reversed the trend of 'in house' gasket manufacture, by the implementation of supply systems to all the industry's major players.

The next phase of the WCL/Amorim initiative is now well under way, with new sealing and anti-vibration materials, developed at Amorim's laboratories in Portugal, being introduced to our customers with great success. As the demand for technically-efficient, long service sealing materials in the transformer & switchgear industry grow, WCL & Amorim will continue to be the market-leaders in the field of product quality and innovation.
